A R T :  C A R O L I N E

Life intrigues me and creativity is a big part of this visual reality.  I find peace in my studio nestled in the Stellenbosch Winelands in South Africa. My formal training started in graphic design followed by the pursuit of commercial design and a marketing career. Fast forward a few years past the birth of 2 children and to a rebirth of my love of fine art. My creative journey now is much more personal and expressed through painting. My preferred mediums are wine-painted-art on paper, oil on canvas and charcoal figurative drawing. I find inspiration through the lens of a camera from life that surrounds me and from perspective that is not easily defined.

A R T I S T    S T A T E M E N T :

I was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1971. My journey in Art has been unconventional - originating in fine art and pursued by a formal education and training in graphic design,  and arriving at a more personal approach to art - several years spent as a student of Stellenbosch artist, Marié Stander and the guidance of Doctor Greg Kerr.

I paint as a visual expression of the world that surrounds me - my life and my travels are what create the driving force behind my energy, inspiring me to create. My paintings directly respond to this purely to give the viewer the enjoyment of art and not in a confrontational or political translation of the times we live in.

I try to articulate this mostly in my wine painted art - attempting to capture the essence, life and character of a moment giving poetic meaning to everyday life through abstraction and expressionism..

I have in the past approached a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered way - as part of my own exploration and technique. By examining the ambiguity and origination via retakes and variations, I try to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations. My painting with wine as a medium was created out of a series of opportunities presented to me some five years ago as a former student of Marié Stander. Through which I have regularly been featured in award winning Tokara Estate, 'Wine made Art' competition. Earlier this year I held me first solo art exhibition at Warwick Wine Estate, largely brought about by an offer from Mike Ratcliffe to exhibit my art using their fine wines as my paint medium.

Whilst I focus primarily on wine art, I have gained recognition for my 'bokeh-style'  art which purposely does not attempt to show the complete structure.  The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. Appreciation of art is subjective and no one viewer encounters it the same way.  I aim to give meaning and provoke thought either through my approach or by emotion conveyed on the canvas.

My background in graphic design has allowed me to explore and convey what I see visually in a way that is specific to my own growth as a person and an artist. My enthusiasm for photography, and travelling is what inspires me and is part of the process I follow in arriving at the final artwork - it is always a process and integral part of my creative journey as is researching and inventing something unique or attempting to create timeless artworks with unique mediums like my wine art.

My art has been exhibited internationally and locally and can be found in private art collections.
