Bokeh is a word that is sometimes spoken of by photographers, usually with a descriptive adjective like smooth or soft attached to it. Some think the term bokeh refers to a shallow depth of field or to anything that’s out of focus, but it’s actually a word that originated in Japan and has a specific definition that goes beyond just referring to a shallow depth of field.
In Japanese, Boke means blur, and in the photography world, bokeh refers to the aesthetic quality of a photo’s out of focus areas, especially the highlights. Certain lenses render these out of focus areas better than others since each lens differs optically.
